Hello, how have you been?
I'm sorry about the long hiatus; school has been crazy during the end of the semester (which has ended a while ago for me), and I find myself having difficulties to properly keep up with social networks. I'm just trying out things here and there to try what works and what doesn't for me. That being said, I haven't left deviant art yet! I find that it is a great platform to share my finished work with people. I'm now going to update quickly about Costume Con 32. Better late than never, right?
My mom, aunt and I arrived late at the hotel the night before friday so we could spend the whole weekend at the con. It was some sort of family trip for me and definitely a good break from all the school projects I had to give in advance right before the event.
I spent friday going to various panels. No costumes, no extravagances; just panels. I've learned a lot during that day and taken a lot of notes! One of my favourite panels was about paper mache, mainly because I almost always end up using this technique to make my props - it's cheap and can be very effective when you know how to use it well. I've learned a few tricks to better my paper mach skills!
Later during friday night, my mom, aunt and I wanted to go see the single pattern competition, which was held at the same time as the social party. At first I really didn't know what I was doing here; social parties aren't my thing. I have a hard time going trough a huge crowd of people, and I'm always akward when meeting people. Against all odds tough, I managed to make some new friends, and the party became a great experience that I would maybe be willing to try again (but seriously, I can be a real party-pooper sometimes). All ended well and it was overall a very fulfilling day.
On saturday, I've worn my Suigintou cosplay. Nothing much happened; I've again spent my whole day going to panels and meeting a few people I knew. I also went to the expositions the con has to offer and discussed with other cosplayers about cosplay tips and tricks! I love the local cosplay and costumes community; people are almost always willing to share their experiences with you, an I was eager to learn and share some of my tips as well! Later on saturday night, there was the Sci-Fi masquerade, which had around 80 entries if I remember well. There was also a TON of Frozen skits, which didn't really surprise me, but I was delighted to see that all of the Frozen cosplayer's presentations were different from each other. One of my favourite entries was "Optimus Time", which presented a crossover between Transformers and Back to The Future (I'm not really a fan of the latter, but I'm in for any great structural, transforming costumes!). There were also a ton of great costumes, and I would love to participate next time I go to Costume Con.
Sunday was overall a great day, which I again spent going to panels. I was originally supposed to enter the Future Fashion Folio, but didn't get the right to because I gave my entry too late - like a month too late. I didn't read the rules correctly and that's what I've gotten for it - but in the end it didn't matter and I still got to wear my original design all day! I've had to change a few things last minute to be able to wear it on time tough. But that's another story for when I'll get pictures of this costume!
Basically, if you saw a HUGE tea table walking around, that was me. I decided that if I was going to costume con, I might as well try an original idea, which was becoming a cute tea table. I've had a lot of people coming up to me and telling me how much they liked the idea - I've also had a few who though I was cosplaying something from Sakizo, which is a HUGE compliment, but I don't really feel comfortable being compared to such an amazing artist. A lot of credit also go to my mom and my aunt, who almost sewed all of the costume for me since school was constantly eating my time. I was responsible of the design and structure of the costume and they were able to make it happen just in time. Anyhow - I spent the day going to panels (and sitting with this HUGE thing isn't easy I tell you), but I had a lot of fun none the less.
Later at night was the historical masquerade, which had a lot of great entries! The research people do to get their costumes as accurate as possible is amazing. There were also a lot of great concepts, such as a Legend of Oz inspired group. I've had to remove my costume to go to the event tough because I was getting tired of having to sit on the ground and that there wasn't much space in the room for me to have this huge thing.
Then we've left the con on monday morning. I had to get back home as early as I could because I had some other exams to take before officially starting my internship is with a theatre group.
Overall, Costume Con 32 was an AMAZING experience and I would love to go there again with my mother. I already ha a lot of ideas in my head - whether I'll make them or not is another story. I've also convinced my sisters to come with me next time; they were sure that it wasn't going to be their thing but apparently they've gained a lot of interest in it after seeing pictures! Next time I go, I'll bring more costumes with me and try to participate in some of the events. My mom's even considering going on a trip next year to catch Costume Con 33. One thing's for sure tough - we'll definitely go to Costume Con 35 if it really is in Toronto again!
To finish this entry, I know I don't update this page as often as I maybe should. But in the meantime, if you're interested in mere thoughts or short updates, I've decided to try using Twitter again. It works well for me so far! Here's a link to my profile page:
